FILM ART MEDIA in association with FARAWAY PRODUCTIONS has officially released the award winning documentary JILL BILCOCK: DANCING THE INVISIBLE for DVD sales and online streaming via Vimeo On Demand. The film tells the story of one of the world’s leading film artists – Academy Award nominated film editor Jill Bilcock.
Jill’s work on classic films such as Strictly Ballroom, Romeo +Juliet, Muriel’s Wedding, The Dressmaker, Road To Perdition, Japanese Story, Moulin Rouge!, Red Dog and Elizabeth, has established her as one of the world’s most daring and in-demand editors, highly sought after by leading international film directors and top film studios – yet she remains relatively unknown.
Interviews include luminary directors Shekhar Kapur, Baz Luhrmann, Fred Schepisi, Jocelyn Moorhouse and Ana Kokkinos together with actor Cate Blanchett. This is combined with rare and previously unseen footage of Jill’s process in the editing suite provides an utterly captivating and unprecedented insight into the artistry of film editing.
The film premiered at the Adelaide Film Festival in 2017 and was nominated Best Feature Documentary at the 2018 AACTA Awards, picking up Best Documentary Biography at the 2017 ATOM Awards. It has since been screened at the Gold Coast FIlm Festival (2018), the Sydney Film Festival (2018), the New Zealand International Film Festival (2019) and is soon to screen at the DOCUTAH International Documentary Film Festival (2019).
Jill Bilcock: Dancing the Invisible is directed by Axel Grigor, produced by Faramarz K-Rahber and Axel Grigor, with SueMaslin (The Dressmaker, Japanese Story) as Executive Producer. The film features commentary from film luminaries Cate Blanchett, Baz Luhrmann, Shekhar Kapur, Phillip Noyce, FredSchepisi, Jocelyn Moorhouse, Ana Kokkinos and Rachel Griffiths. With rare and previously unseen footage of Bilcock’s process in the editing suite, the documentary provides an utterly captivating and unprecedented insight into the artistry of film editing.
Director Axel Grigor has long admired Jill’s work and considered her a highly-deserving subject for the film. He comments, “Jill’s outgoing personality, her personal journey in life, her impact on Australian cinema and her remarkable collaborations with some of the world’s leading directors make for an incredibly rich story. Early in the process, when I approached many of Jill’s collaborators about my idea for this film, it was both striking and encouraging that so many replied, “About time!”
