RE-ENCHANTMENT STUDY GUIDE
Re-enchantment is an immersive journey into the hidden meanings of fairy tales. Presented as a multi-platform documentary project, it explores why fairy stories continue to enchant, entertain, fascinate and horrify contemporary adult audiences. It is targeted to students in Years 10–12 and at tertiary level.

The study guide assists teachers and students to work with the Re-enchantment website as well as the DVD (a series of 10 x 3-minute animated documentaries revealing the hidden meanings of traditional fairy tales).
The study guide explores six fairy tales – Cinderella, Bluebeard, Hansel and Gretel, Snow White, Rapunzel and Red Riding Hood.
Student activities centre on ten common fairy tale themes, including:
why fairy tales survive across time and culture
wicked stepmothers
princess culture
fairy tale motifs of the forest
the forbidden room and beastly husbands
their dark emotions
sexuality and the contemporary re-imaginings.
They present new ways of thinking about familiar and much-loved fairy tales.
Drawing together animation, interviews, advertisements, artworks and clips from popular films and television programs, Re-enchantment is a beautifully presented and thought-provoking documentary work. The iBook version of the ATOM study guide is rich in imagery and video clips and enables students to work on iPad worksheets as well as encouraging them to contribute their own fairy tale re-imaginings to the Gallery of fairy tale artworks.
Relevant secondary curriculum areas include: English Literature, Creative and Studio Arts, Media and Film Studies, and Psychology. At tertiary level: Women’s Studies, Cultural Studies, Creative Writing, Art and Social History, Media Studies, Psychology and Early Childhood Studies.
